One Day You Find Thirty Years Have Got Behind You!

I can actually still remember that day, it was a Friday and after work I drove few miles to the Torrance Squash Club. I wasn’t sure who it is, I was supposed to play in a tournament that covered all levels, but here you walked in with your beautiful shy smile. I like to think that I lost the game deliberately, so dinner would be on me, but you have always maintained that you beat me fair and square. I am really not sure anymore, because on most topics, I have gotten to see things more like you and less like me.

Marianne Faithful and Joan Baez not to mention my absolute favorite Dire Straits, this music is really your music, but it is now my music and has been for so long, I am not sure, when it became my music too, but it is.

We agreed on human rights but differed on politics, you were consistently left, I was right and jumping all over the place, as the years passed, especially after my shameful vote for Bush in 2000, I have seen the light, I am still at times, all over the place, but you are my right. So even my politics is far closer to yours today, than it was to my old self, and that feels right too.

I stopped smoking in 1992 because of the one time, just the once, that your tearful beautiful face told me of your fears! You never nagged me, you accepted me smoke stench and all. Alas, it was your fears and worries that betrayed you that one time, you turned me into the health conscious person I am today.

Since that squash game, or really a year and few months after that, you have become the constant in my life of turmoil, living in California, Ohio, London, Boston, Hong Kong and Boston and now finally in rural England. Home for me, is where you are, where your salad mustard dressing is made…. It is your generous beautiful voice that I long for and your beautiful smile that is my home. I look at your beautiful face today and I see the very same beauty that I saw for the first time on June 29, 1984 in Torrance, CA.

The years have passed and we dealt with brain tumors, countless health crises, and we deal with never ending worry for the health of our kids, and with the stresses of losing our loved ones. We dealt with many stresses and differences, but you remain today my wonderful friend and life companion. We still can spend hours talking about the subtle difference in the meaning of words and how one language can express certain things better than another. We can spend hours in silent companionship that is easy and comfortable, we can go on for days with no communication when traveling, we have our way, a non-possessive way that just works.

Not sure, which one of us coined the expression that a true good relationship or love is all about taking the other for granted, I still think that, we are only truly secure, truly ourselves, if we are accepted as we are; you have accepted me for what I was, and I gradually changed to be a better person, changed to be more like you.

The things in me, that I really approve, are the things that came from you! These are things that are actually closer to you. The me that I love, is the me that you created deliberately or not.

Ps. I revolted against your negative views of Ash trees and Ash is now my absolute favorite tree. I know it is your least favorite, but I do have to assert my own personality, so here it is I do love Ash trees, especially in June.

Ps. I still think I really did let you win that game.

In Search of Balance: Al Jazeera Verdict In Egypt Today

A strange mix of feelings of sadness, dismay and anger arise in me as I read seemingly endless attempts from many Egyptians to justify and defend the court ruling against the Al Jazeera journalists in Egypt, here are some of my reflections and thoughts on this:

1. I don't view Al Jazeera Arabic as normal media or press, I view it as enemy state propaganda outlet, it reminds me so much of the Soviet Radio during the years of the cold war, it is pathetic, cheap, non relenting propaganda.

2. Al Jazeera English has many top notch reporters and professionals who have been trying to do a credible job and seem to have more professional more balanced overall editorial management, but they have been used by their Arabic Language sister company mentioned above.

3. I don't believe Al Jazeera English correspondents and other professionals working in Egypt are affiliated with Muslim Brothers, work for them or conspire with them and I don't believe that the evidence against them, I read about in the press, has shown them to be enemies of Egypt.

4. I believe that Egypt is right to arrest, deport and fine those who break its laws.

5. I acknowledge that there are thousands of Egyptian and foreign reporters reporting and writing at times negative and / or highly critical news and analysis of Egypt, yet appear to have not been interfered with, which is good and is indeed a legitimate argument to defend Egypt's position, being focused on Al Jazeera. Yet, the Dutch Journalist, who was being tried in absentia with Al Jazeera staff, appear to have no affiliation with Al Jazeera.

6. It is also very clear that the space for dissent in Egypt is narrowing and we see many Egyptians voices silenced from Bassem Youssif to Belal Fadel and many others. It is hard to deny this as a fact.

7. I have a great deal of sympathy with the view that Egypt is facing a very serious war with a very difficult enemy and that combating the threat of violent terrorism is a TOP priority for Egypt. I do believe that this would naturally have an impact on freedoms. Years in the security industry have taught me the difficulty of balancing issues of security with privacy, convenience and freedoms in general; true in Egypt as it is in USA or Australia.

8. I have a great deal of sympathy with the view that Egypt has always had authoritarian and totalitarian tendencies and desire to curb dissent and the government has had a history of using the worst means to silence liberal non Islamist opposition to protect the ruling regimes, often at the expense of the country itself and its future.  Accordingly, using terrorism as an excuse to suppress freedoms should not be just allowed to happen with no opposition.

9. I do believe it is critical for Egypt, as a state to avoid the collapse that can be witnessed in so many failed states in the Middle East, the examples of Libya, Yemen, Syria and Iraq are chilling and frightening and I have sympathy with the tens of millions of ordinary Egyptians, who are willing to turn blind eye to suppression of freedoms to preserve the State from collapsing.

10. Sadly, I believe that insensitivity by some of the liberal forces in Egypt to the grave Islamist threat that Egypt is facing, is causing them to challenge the State authority. With tens of millions of tired and frightened ordinary Egyptians wanting the State to reestablish its authority, the ill timed courage is resulting in deeper suppression of freedom, with popular consent, this is most distressing of all. My hope is that the vigilance against the excesses of the State would be confronted through means other than the hated and futile street protests.

I Accuse ... Me!

accuse me of blindness ..
I accuse me of deafness ..
I accuse me of falling in for hate ...
I accuse me of allowing my hate for an ideology to cloud my humanity ...
I accuse me of losing my moral compass ...
I accuse me of delaying an overdue apology ...

I write of my reaction to the loss of life and the suffering associated with ending the sit-in protest of the Muslim Brotherhood and their supporters at Rabba in Nasr City, in Cairo, Egypt in August 2013.

The ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood is repugnant to me, an fundamentally supremacist ideology that cloaks its far right Islamic nationalism with a theological cover. It claims to speak for my faith, lures the unsuspecting pious idealists into the cult and then uses the ugliest of the "end justifies the means" tactics to advance its cause. A throw back to the fascist and nationalist movements of the early Twentieth Century that seemed to have successfully reformed itself in the 1970's, under the leadership of the late Omar Telmessany, but shortly after his death reverted back to its ugly roots. In short, I reject Muslim Brotherhood as an ideology and practice with every bone in my body.

My hate for the ideology is more intense because I had, wrongly, believed that the Muslim Brotherhood had indeed reformed itself and remained faithful to the Telmessany Doctrine; I was willing to support Mr. Morsi as President of Egypt after listening to his early speeches which echoed that doctrine. Little did I know, I and millions of other Egyptians were duped and as events unfolded, it became abundantly  clear that the Telmessany reforms were buried with him, the Brotherhood and Mr. Morsi wanted to build their state, wanted to co-opt the tools of democracy build their fascist state, they tasted power and would never give it up. From their early days, the Brotherhood viewed violence and assassinations as legitimate tools, always denied them at the time, but later took immense pride in them. Accordingly I don't believe their claim to peacefulness and their denunciation of violence, the doctrine they live by clearly allows violence despite of their protestations to the contrary.

Yet, the vast majority of the supporters of the Muslim Brothers have never actually taken part in any violent act themselves and many actually abhor violence; they have been duped, seduced by the machine in the name of God and Islam, they are victims too. Maybe even they are not victims and are "all on in it" together, how would that justify the scale of the bloodshed.

The Rabba protest was a disgusting invasion into the lives of the residents of the area, it had to have been dispersed and the use of force, on the part of the state, against a sit-in that was not entirely peaceful, was inevitable. Any Egyptian who has ever encountered a demonstration of the Brotherhood and their supporters knows of their thuggery and the fear they instill in those who do not support them, let alone dare oppose them. Rabba protest had to be dispersed, but what about the cost? How much killing was too much?

I want to apologize, for the anger I felt did not allow me to see clearly the horrible scale. I remain convinced that the Muslim Brotherhood wanted a massacre of their own people, they wanted martyrs and to use the blood of their martyrs to wash the sins of the period of Mr. Morsi and Mr. Katatany as leaders of the executive and legislative branches conspiring to make the Brotherhood rule permanent. Their own complicity and cruelty should not have silenced me ... Should have not blinded me to the horrible suffering. I never gloated at the death, was not entirely indifferent to it either, but was not as shaken by it as others who are also opposed to the Brotherhood have. My hate lost me a part of my humanity!

I write these words as many Egyptians celebrate another nail in the coffin of the Brotherhood, for this is perhaps their darkest hour. The streets of Egypt are full of people celebrating the crowning of the man the Brotherhood loath the most. Yet, I owe them too an apology for my lack of outrage at the scale of the killings and the suffering. This is an apology to all those who suffered and their families, not to the organization or its Machiavellian leadership.  I owe further apology to my friends and relatives, who were never affiliated with the Brotherhood and actually opposed them, but unlike me, their hatred for an ideology did not blind them to the scale of the carnage, did not mask their soles as it did mine.

I accuse me ...still of not being as human as some of my beautiful friends and family and many of the amazing activists of Egypt, you are all better human beings than me, for in mind I see the cruelty and injustice but my anger and hate still stands in my way, thank you for being a guiding light!
